1.

Proximity of an alternative service to the home is not specified.

2.

An attempt to locate serviceman territorially closer to home.

The system of weekend passes is very simple, some recruits serve almost at home, go to service in the mornings, like to work.

3.

Permissive.

The decision is made by the only commission that has the right to decide on granting the citizen the right to an alternative service.

4.

Greece recognizes the refusal of military service associated with carrying of weapons, but such a refusal is not recognized if the non-combat service is not related to the carrying of weapons.

The status of a conscientious objector is granted only to members of the Jehovah's Witnesses religious organization, who motivate their refusal by religious beliefs.

Despite the fact that Greece is a member of NATO and the Council of Europe, hundreds of men are brought to court every year in connection with the refusal of military service on religious grounds.

5.

The Armed Forces of Greece are completed on the basis of the law on general liability for military service.

Citizens from 19 to 45 years of age are considered to be military. For military registration, the "sigma-cap" system is used, the number of which is the sum of the addition of the year of the conscript's birth and the number 21. This number is assigned to every Greek citizen of the male gender.

Exempt from conscription into the army:

  • a citizen recognized as unfit for health reasons;
  • the only son of deceased parents or the eldest son of deceased parents who has at least one / one brother / sister who are under age and unmarried;
  • dowager father of one or more minor or unfit for work due to the state of health of an unmarried child;
  • father of one or more children, provided that his spouse is not fit for work due to health reasons;
  • father of three children.

6.

Conscripts have no possibility to choose the place of civil service.

Moreover, taking decisions on the issue of conscientious objection to military service, as well as the management of an alternative civil service, are not fully in the hands of the civil authorities.

7.

The 6th article of the Law on the Military Service of Greek Citizens No. 3421 of December 13, 2005 defines the terms of military service, namely:

Naval and Air Force - 12 months;
Other units - 8 months.

The law provides the possibility of reduced service up to 3 months for the categories of citizens defined by law.

8.

Refusal of any type of service is not provided.

9.

The status of conscientious objectors is granted only to members of the religious organization "Jehovah's Witnesses" who motivate their refusal by religious beliefs. Greece is a member of the European Union and NATO, and formally, conscripts have the right to refuse military service on convictions. But in fact the procedure is such that this right is realized very, very notionally.

In Greece, in accordance with the provisions of the law, following people can’t get status of conscientious objector:

  • those who were at least some time in military service in Greece, in foreign armed forces, in security services;
  • those who received permission to carry weapons or applied for the issuance of such permits;
  • those who took part in individual or collective activities related to wrestling, hunting or similar activities directly related to the use of weapons;
  • those who have been convicted of a crime involving the use of weapons, ammunition or the unlawful use of force;
  • those against whom the criminal prosecution continues for the committing of the above-mentioned crimes.

10.

There is a conscription.

Paragraph 1 of Article 1 of the Law on the Military Duty of Greek Citizens No. 3421 of December 13, 2005 specifies that all Greeks are mandatory liable for military service  from January 1 of the year when they turn 19 years old and by December 31 of the year when they turn 45.
For recording of conscripts, the so-called “sigma-capa” military categories system is used. It’s a number system which made by sum of the year of the conscript's birth and the number 21. This number is assigned to every male Greek citizen registered in the lists of persons liable for military service in municipalities.

Article 6 of the Law determines the period of military service, in particular: the period of full military service is 12 months for ordinary soldiers and 17 months for reserve officers; reduced terms of service are 9-month and 6-month, but in no case the period of compulsory military service can be reduced for a period less than 3 months.

11.

It is not clearly defined under law.

12.

Greece has only one commission, which has the right to decide on granting the citizen the right to alternative service.

If the conscript receives a refusal, he will be recruited for military service. He can challenge the decision of the commission in court, but the procedure of conscription will not be stopped.

Before the decision of this commission is taken, an application for alternative service is considered by commission formed from representatives of the civil and military administration, which makes a recommendation to replace or refuse the replacement of military service.

13.

There is no right to refuse military service on convictions for those who make such a decision while serving in the armed forces.

14.

Twice longer than military one - in Greece for those who go to military service without weapons, instead of military service with weapons, the term of service is 18 months, and for those who pass alternative civil service in the social sector - 23 months.
